What can I say, deli meats are appealing to busy families who need to make lunch quickly. They have a long expiry date and have an infinite variety of flavors.
A certain company, came out with a new product of deli meats in 2010 called "Natural" deli meats, nitrite free! They state that the deli meat (which is still highly processed) has no added preservatives, they state that the deli meat contains cultured celery extract, which is a natural source of nitrates.
In Canada, foods cannot be labeled "Natural" if they contain nitrates but seeing as the nitrates found in the new "Natural" deli meat are from celery, they can then say that the product is natural.
Some studies have said that when nitrates are found naturally in vegetables the vitamins and minerals that the vegetables contain help prevent the nitrates transform into nitrites. Even if one day they could produce deli meats and hotdogs with out nitrates of any form they still contain a high amount of bad fat and salt.
I'm not saying never eat these products again but eat in moderation and try to roast chicken breasts and fish for your sandwiches instead.
